Birds vs. Weather

Guiding Question:
I was just wondering when will birds come most often. So I came up with this question: Will birds come more often to the bird feeder when the weather is warmer, than when it's colder?

Procedure for Investigation:
  • Put green bird feeder on your back deck
  • Put bird food in the feeder
  • Mark every inch with masking tape and other measurements if you choose and put it on the bird feeder
  • Measure the bird seed with a tape measure at the end of the day, to make sure what the birds ate that day(the tape is your guide)
  • Write down the high and the low of the day

Materials:
  • A green bird feeder
  • Bird food
  • A tape measure
  • Pencil and paper
  • Masking tape

Hypothesis:
I think the birds will come at warmer times because that's what habitat they live in and need to keep warm. They also fly south for the winter.

Independent variable:
The temperature of each day

Dependent variable:
The amount of food eaten in a day

Constants:
Placement of bird feeder, and bird food.

Results and Data:
The food I put in the bird feeder started at 2 1/2 inches.

Interpretation of Results:
I got good results and they were easy to follow. My research data over a 5 day period showed that birds didn't eat any food. You can see how the weather went up and back down again. It might of been too cold over this time period. Note: I have 6 dogs.

Conclusion:
My results did support my hypothesis, in the five days I've tested my question. I have seen birds at my bird feeder during the spring and summer that also supports my hypothesis.
My results say that birds prefer warmer weather, they definitely don't like the cold. The hardest thing about this experiment was I did this in the winter. The things I might change are: the placement of the bird feeder, and the time of year. Maybe spring when birds come out. We also probably didn't have any migrating birds. Otherwise it was a good experiment!
